the release of the single motherless child by anina rubin and lori blum was part of a short film production by nelly corsten. motherless child is an old spiritual folk song from the 19th century us.
it is said that the first version was performed and brought to wider audiences by the fisk jubilee singers, an african-american acapella ensemble. the band name was taken after the fisk university of nashville, tennesse. the university was founded for freedman and “young men and women irrespective of color.” in 1866 shortly after the american civil war. a few years after the opening the university got into financial troubles. to maintain its educational program, a mixed gender student choir went on tour to earn the money for the university.
they were loved and cherished by their audiences, and even toured through the uk and europe in the 1870s. even though the beginning years were difficult, while new members kept replacing their older generations, the ensemble of the fisk jubilee singers has been lasting till this day with international concerts.

sometimes i feel like a motherless child
sometimes i feel like a motherless child
a long way from home, a long way from home
sometimes i feel like a feather in the air
sometimes i feel like a feather in the air
a long way from home, a long way from home
sometimes i feel like i’m almost gone
sometimes i feel like i’m almost gone
a long way from home, a long way from home
